Using Uber for the first time can feel like a lot. There’s a map, a price, a driver’s name, and a car you have to find. Don’t worry. Once you go through it one step at a time, booking a ride takes about two minutes. Here’s exactly what to do.

Your first ride in four steps (approximate time)
Item Approximate figure
Make an account about 3 minutes
Book a ride under 1 minute
Check the driver under 1 minute
Pay and rate about 1 minute

Step 1: Create your account

  1. Download the Uber app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Tap Sign up and enter your phone number and email address.
  3. Enter your name and add a payment method. You can add a card or, where it’s available, cash.

You can also sign up on the Uber website in a web browser if you don’t want to use an app.

Step 2: Book your ride

  1. Tap Where to? and type your destination.
  2. Check that your pickup spot is correct on the map.
  3. Choose a ride type and tap Confirm. The app shows the price before you book.

Step 3: Check your driver before you get in

This is the most important step, especially for a first ride. Before you get into any car, check that the license plate, car make and model, and driver’s photo match what’s on your screen. Only get in if they match.

Step 4: Pay and rate your trip

Payment happens in the app when the trip ends. Once you arrive, you can rate your driver and add a tip if you want. You can also tip after the trip in the app’s trip history.

Stay safe on every ride

  • Share your trip with a family member or friend from the app.
  • Use the emergency button in the app if you feel unsafe. It can call 911 and share your location.
  • Keep your phone number private. Uber lets you call or text your driver without showing your number.

Frequently asked questions

What if I can’t find my driver?

Use the in-app chat or call button to reach your driver. Stay at your pickup spot, and wait for the car to match the details in the app.

Can I use Uber without a smartphone?

Uber trips are requested through the app or the Uber website. You need a phone or computer with internet access to book a ride.

My take

Take your first ride when you’re not in a hurry. Check the car before you get in, and share your trip with someone you trust. Once you’ve done it once, the rest gets easier. Download the official Uber app or find it on Google Play.
